The replica of Palmyra's Arch of Triumph that was recently destroyed by the Islamic State is unique in that it a life-size imitation of the monument, made of Egyptian marble as the original ruins at the site were, and of course that was physically created by a 3D printer. While the exhibition of this replica has been publicly praised and celebrated as a step towards preserving cultural heritage, it also has a fair amount of dissenters. This paper written for a course on applying theory to material culture and the public humanities is based on engaging the how and why of this moral contention.
